INTERSTATE - BRAND BEYOND THE PRODUCT
An App for POPMART, allowing customers to swap duplicates and build connections with those within the local area

Timeline
From explorations to final designs in 21 weeks while working on 2 projects at the same time
Brief challenge
Design a digital experience that responds to changing consumer expectations around trust, value, and human connection. The outcome should show how brands can build meaningful, long-term relationships through supportive, useful, and intentional experiences rather than purely transactional interactions.
Brief context
As consumer expectations evolve, brands are no longer judged solely on products or convenience. Users increasingly seek experiences that feel supportive, trustworthy, and emotionally valuable. This shift requires brands to move away from extractive, sales-driven interactions and toward experiences that provide guidance, fairness, usefulness, and long-term support. Through research-driven UX design, this project explores how digital experiences can strengthen relationships between brands and consumers by creating interactions that feel purposeful, human, and genuinely beneficial.
Research & Planning
I conducted a range of research methods to better understand the experiences, behaviours, and motivations of Pop Mart collectors in order to create a more connected and community-focused swapping experience.
Problem Statement: PopMart collectors often struggle to trade duplicate figures efficiently. Many fans currently rely on community Discord servers to arrange swaps, however these platforms can feel disorganised, overwhelming, and difficult to navigate. Conversations move quickly, trades can get lost in crowded channels, and there is no dedicated system for tracking collections or finding nearby collectors. This creates frustration for users who simply want an easier and more reliable way to complete their collections and connect with other fans of the brand.
Competitor research: I analysed existing trading, collecting, and marketplace platforms to identify common features, usability patterns, and gaps within the collector community space. Apps such as trading platforms and collector trackers highlighted the importance of collection logging, user profiles, and real-time communication, however many lacked a clear focus on local swapping and community building. This research helped identify opportunities for a more streamlined and user-friendly experience tailored specifically towards Pop Mart collectors.
Opportunity Solution Tree: The opportunity solution tree helped me break down the core problems users experience when collecting PopMart figures and explore possible solutions. Key opportunities included helping users avoid buying duplicate figures, creating easier ways to swap locally, improving collection tracking, and building stronger communication between collectors. This process allowed me to map user needs directly to practical app features and prioritise the most valuable solutions.
Name & Logo Development: I explored a variety of naming ideas and visual directions that reflected the concept of trading, swapping, and collecting. The final name, ‘PopSwap’, was chosen because it directly communicates the app’s purpose while remaining simple, memorable, and connected to the Pop Mart brand identity. Logo experimentation focused on maintaining recognisability while creating a distinct identity for the app itself.
Visual Design Research: I created moodboards and visual research boards to explore interface inspiration, colour usage, typography, and UI patterns that aligned with both Pop Mart’s playful branding and modern mobile app design. This helped establish a visual direction that feels vibrant, community-driven, and easy to navigate while still reflecting the collectible nature of the brand.
Wireframing & Prototyping: I began the design process through hand-drawn wireframes to quickly explore layout ideas, navigation structures, and feature placement. Low-fidelity wireframes allowed me to refine the app structure and user journeys before progressing into high-fidelity prototypes. The final interface focused on simplicity, accessibility, and creating a smooth user experience for collectors of all experience levels.
Value Proposition Canvas: My value proposition focused on creating a platform that allows Pop Mart collectors to swap duplicate figures more easily within their local area while also tracking and showcasing their collections digitally. The app encourages stronger community interaction through messaging, friend systems, and exclusive rewards, creating a more meaningful and engaging experience beyond simply purchasing products.
Design & Prototyping
Based on my research, I incorporated key findings into the wireframes for the app, understanding what would be needed to be added to a trading app.
Testing & Optimization
Tested the app across multiple devices and platforms to ensure compatibility and performance. Collected user feedback through beta testing and continuously refined the app based on usability metrics and user satisfaction.
