APP DESIGN
Creating an app to better life in Norwich.
Timeline
From research, explorations to final designs in 3 days, solely focusing on this project.
Brief challenge
Design an app that improves the quality of life for people in Norwich. The app should be user-friendly, innovative, and practical, addressing a specific community need, whether it’s related to transport, education, or local services. The app should focus on providing a solution that can be integrated into everyday life, with a clear target audience in mind.
Brief context
This project is an opportunity to apply the principles of user-centered design to create a product that enhances the community. You will explore how to address local challenges through digital solutions while focusing on usability, accessibility, and user experience. The project will require understanding of user needs, research, and iterative design processes to ensure the app delivers value to the target users.
This section outlines the step-by-step process I followed with my group, including the research, planning, design, and development phases.
Research & Planning
Once we were assigned to our groups, we introduced ourselves and discussed our strengths in graphics and coding. After sharing our expertise, we brainstormed potential issues in Norwich that could be addressed with an app. After an in-depth discussion, we decided to create an app that encourages acts of kindness, selflessness, and exploration.
Design & Prototyping
In our team, I took on the role of a designer alongside Rosie Allison-Corio. In this role, I contributed to creating wireframes for the app, developing the colour scheme, designing the logo, and, towards the end of the event, organising the presentation slides.
Implementation
My team developed a web application designed to make a real impact on the local community. Inspired by gamification elements from apps like Pokémon Go, our platform encouraged users to complete meaningful tasks across Norfolk & Norwich, each contributing to a positive real-world change.
An app designed to promote kindness, selflessness, and adventure, aiming to reduce depression rates in Norwich.
Three sections
We structured these tasks into three categories: Virtuous, Adventure, and Selfless.
Virtuous tasks focused on giving back, such as donating to food banks.
Adventure tasks encouraged exploration, helping combat loneliness by motivating users to discover more of the county.
Selfless tasks connected people with volunteer opportunities, enabling them to make a tangible difference.
Leaderboard & Award system
By implementing this feature in our app, users can connect with others online, fostering a sense of community in Norwich and addressing the loneliness that may contribute to depression. This feature encourages users to become more engaged and empowered, helping them strive to be "better citizens" in the city.

Won the overall event
The judges announced our win and provided very positive feedback on the concept.
Positive future
The judges expressed confidence in the app's potential success, encouraging us to invest further in its development. They also hoped it could expand beyond Norwich and reach other counties across England.
