Free trial onboarding website
Creating a free trial onboarding for new RCA users
Timeline
From research, explorations to final designs in 10 weeks, solely focusing on this project.
Brief challenge
The company currently uses a traditional human sales-team approach with multiple touchpoints to gain large organizations as customers. These touchpoints include identifying potential customers, demoing the product, converting leads into clients, and gathering customer information to tailor the product. Contracts and invoices are generated outside the product.
A product-led digital onboarding solution could allow visitors to start a free trial directly from the website, quickly gather necessary information, and set them up in the system without sales staff interaction. Once in the product, customers should be informed of their 14-day trial limit and easily transition from the free trial to purchase.
This section details the step-by-step process I followed with my group, covering research, planning, design, and development stages.
Research & Planning
We began by assigning roles to each team member and setting deadlines for completing the research. For the research phase, we each selected similar RCA platforms and analyzed their onboarding processes, paying attention to the questions and information requested from customers during sign-up. In addition, we explored successful onboarding flows from non-RCA platforms to understand how other companies keep users engaged throughout the process without causing frustration or drop-off.
Next, we personally tested the What Caused This platform, noting any points of confusion as first-time users. This allowed us to identify areas for improvement, which we incorporated into our own onboarding process.
Design & Prototyping
Based on our research, we divided the workload for the onboarding flow into three main sections: sign-up, tutorial/dashboard, and payment onboarding. I took on the task of designing the tutorial/dashboard onboarding alongside my partner Naomi.
Together, we developed a product tour that integrated an interactive guide, walking users through the process of creating their first RCA. The tour then directed them to the tutorial page, highlighting key features of the free trial.
Implementation
We designed the onboarding flow with a focus on attracting new users to explore the RCA website and encouraging them to purchase both the Lite and Pro versions of the platform.
